Here’s a quick and actionable tip. It assumes you know you should be getting her attention before opening.
When approaching a stationary girl, get her attention first with a “hey” from 2.5 meters away. It’s far enough that she’ll know you’re addressing her and not so close that it’s weirdly startling. This assumes you’re approaching from a 45 degree angle.
If you don't have a ruler you can estimate. I found 2.5 meters to be 2 sidewalk squares in North America.
