Hi all,

What are positive and negative consequences of displaying cool behaviour at workplace with reference to your dealings with superiors? I have a different perspective on certain issues which my leadership team doesn't necessarily agree with. I also do not hesitate from expressing my opinion, breaking rules ' sometime' and reaching out to my bosses that could end up rubbing them in wrong way if they are scared or insecure individuals.

Disagreeing is fine as long as it doesn't come off rude or attacks the other persons character.

This is again very vague.
Break what rules? Is it helpful to the organization?

Is your plan actually feasible through logic and facts and not just an ego thing? Do other people on the team agree with you or you are the only one?

Specific examples will help you.

A lot of context.

- Culture
- Ego
- Age
- Showmanship

I'm still putting pieces together. But don't expect every environment to be the same. Military vs Civilian, South Korean respect vs South East Asia respect, as examples.

But the good thing is that humans have patterns that they don't divert away from, for most of the time.

Being cool is being adaptable and likable. You are always going to do good with that one.

Breaking rules and defending your ground, on the other hand, is not a “everybody likes it” kind of behavior.
For that one, it is really contextual to the culture of the company and the position of the person you are disagreeing a with.

Some company cultures and some bosses can’t deal effectively with disagreements.
If you disagree on the wrong subject, it can even end your career.

It also boils down to wether the company culture incentivizes free-thinking for the sake of results. Most big companies do not.
I have always been the overachiever, results driven kind of guy… how has that helped me in my corporate jobs? Not as much as you would think.

We like to believe that merit and results is the main driver of big companies… in my experience, it is only truth for growing companies.

In other words, is the company growing? Then the abundance culture will allow you to disregard rules so long you can back it with results.
Is the company stalled or going smaller? You cannot afford to break rules and office politics emerge.
