Girl sitting down in a single chair, no nearby seat?

Today in the bookstore, there was a girl reading a book on a single chair. I approached her, opening directly. I was standing while she was sitting, which I thought was bad situation because clearly I was putting in more effort.

How do you guys deal with this situation?

Hey curiosity,

You're right about putting in more effort and ideally you want to be in the same level as her.
It really depends on the environment but here's what I do.

After I open her w/ (opener of my choice), I'll gauge how she reacts.

1. If she seems receptive, I'll say hold on one second.

And I'll bring a chair next to her chair side by side and carry on with my conversation (You don't want to be sitting right in front of her)

2. Second one is you can kneel on one knee real quick and make it quick.

Me: "Hey I got to get going, but you're cute"
Her: "Thank you"
Me: I'm X nice to meet you. (And as Im saying this, I'll kneel in one knee and put a time constraint b/c you don't want to kneel too long or it can get awkward)
Her: I'm X.
Me: Well listen, I actually have to get running and get to X but tell me something cool about you. (Qualify right away)
Her: Well I do X
Me: Really? (relate)
Me: You seem like a cool girl, I'd love to meet you up sometime. Put your number in my phone.
(Hand her the phone)
Me: Great meeting you!

And move out

The best formulae for that. I've used it a couple of times and it's never corny to do.

Your response is perfect. I just tested it out today, the first time it bombed, but the second time it seemed to work.

In the bookstore, she was sitting in a single chair, looking out the window. No nearby chair, so I went for your second one.
Me (slight teasing tone): What're you looking at?
Her: Just ... nothing, the street.
Me: You're cute.
Her: Thank you.
Me: I'm _____, what's your name? (I leaned down towards her)
Her: _____
Me: _____, nice to meet you (Hold her hand Chase's style). Actually, I have to get going but tell me one thing cool about you.
At this point there were a strange woman standing next to her. She didn't notice the woman. I kept eye contact with the girl.
Her: Uhm ... I don't know ... (silence for 5 seconds) ... I listen to music.
Me: Really? I was in the car, my friend turned on the music and it changed my life.
Her: (laughs)
Me: You seems cool. We should grab a coffee sometimes.
Her: Sure why not.
Me: (give her my phone) Just put in your number and I'll contact you soon.
Her: I'm not sure (but still about to put in the number).
Strange woman: No no no.
I slowly turned my head up. She was old. I thought, "Oh shit!"
Woman: She's my daughter.
Me: Your daughter is cute though.
Woman: She's very young. You have good intention. I appreciate it.
I didn't remember exactly what her mom said, but clearly her mom wanted me to go, so I ejected.

This was my last approach in the day though. It could have worked if her mom was not there.

Here's a few pointers for qualifiers.


Me: _____, nice to meet you (Hold her hand Chase's style). Actually, I have to get going but tell me one thing cool about you.
Her: Uhm ... I don't know ... (silence for 5 seconds) ... I listen to music.

You have to gauge her reaction a bit and her confidence level.
Because if you're qualifying, she can get nervous for being put on the spot.
If she's confident, she'll qualify to you.
But in this case, she was a bit shy and nervous. "Um.. I don't know... I listen to.. music?"

And I think you actually did really good in this part for making her laugh and reducing the tension.
But, what you might want to do next time is what I call "set an example" and take the lead.

So if she's hesitant and says "I don't know"
I'll respond with.. "Haha well, for me, I love doing X because (and describe why you love a certain hobby)" and ask a question that's more specific right after such as
"What's a hobby that you do when you have free time?"

And she'll follow your example.

From here, you do the same thing. (Relate)
And say, hey well you sound X (character you appreciate in a girl), let's get together again sometimes.
Put your number in

And as far as moms, it really depends.
Some are cool and some are over protective.
It's a hit and miss.
