As a matter of principle, if a woman tells me she has a boyfriend/ significant other, I don't press the issue. I respect that relationship and I don't interfere. Regardless if she's in a poor relationship or not, I don't cross that line.
As for ejecting from a convo, I let it wane naturally, without forcing it. And then I'll tell her that it was a pleasure meeting her/ maybe I'll see you around later.
I think the problem is that when you meet a woman and she's in a relationship, there is a tendency to flinch or become discouraged. Sure, she is someone you would like to get to know better or jump her bones, but it shouldn't change the way you treat her.
Many of my friends will either ignore her relationship status and press forward, or they shut down completely and start getting bitter or nasty towards the girl, as if they just got rejected.
