He mentions posting up at the magazine rack. Today I stood reading Serj Tankian's book (System of a Down... The last CD I ever bought, as a reward from my speech therapist for placing an order at McDonald's).
I got a LOT of hovers. It was interesting to see how they varied in length and level of eye contact, smiles, etc.
I have noticed this while reading ingredients in grocery stores as well. I recommend the girls closer to produce than the chips aisle.
It seemed to help to be visibly and genuinely engrossed in the book. One passage in particular:
I let my actions be dictated by fear. Fear of ridicule. Fear of ostracism. Fear of violence [...] Now I knew what it felt like to hold my tongue when it most needed to be unleashed. And I vowed that I would never let it happen again.
The last song in the car before going in featured this from Jimmy Iovine.
Fear's a powerful thing. I mean it's got a lot of firepower. If you can figure out a way to wrestle that fear to push you from behind rather than to stand in front of you, that's very powerful.
