Hey, members! I've been throwing this question around for a while and I think that this is one of the best places to get a no b.s. answer. As a current college student majoring in filmmaking (a field with fierce competition and not well-paying entry level work) I've been wanting to break out on my own and support myself, a necessary step on the road to being a great man, but the job I work at now pays peanuts. I don't want to sacrifice my dream and quit school to work full-time but I understand that some compromises must be made. I also don't want to quit exercising, eating right, and practicing pick-up. I hear that Cost-co and Home Depot pay well for hourly work but there's high demand and that salesmen with commission can clean up (but only if they're good).

You guys have any suggestions?

There are some difficult questions you need to ask yourself about your schooling.

Why are you in film?
Can you accomplish your goals without an expensive bachelor's degree?
Why are you in college? Is it because you decided that getting a degree was a necessity in achieving your goals, or because you ended up there as a result of following the norm?
Can the cost be reduced? Can I apply for scholarships to save money and time?

My views on a lot of things differ from the normal perspective, so I won't impose them on you. I just want you to think about how you can use less and enjoy more. Sometimes the solution is there, and just needs some thinking. Take time to understand how you spend your money, and ask if it is needed. If it isn't necessary, it can be cut.

Stay in your school and starve really. That's the only way you make it in the film industry 80% of hollywood actors got to where they are by starving and you need to make your connections. I don't know where you study but Lee Strasberg guys usually get to work with big time directors through their teachers and such so you have to have that awesome taught me everything kind of guy to help you out getting started also don't be too damn picky about your first job in terms of paychecks, you're starving to do the job you're passionate about, if you're there for just the money, you're not just compromising your learning process and experience but you're submitting into being a mediocre street caricaturist that does it out of pure desperation not passion .

Well it really just comes down to how bad do you want it , in my personal experience when you sacrifice a lot to do something you love it will pay off at some point.
In my case I took up a martial art just when I was starting college at that point I had a well paying job and basically could buy most of the shit I wanted , but after 8 months I really fell in live with doing it so I quit my job and focused all my attention in getting better at it.
I went from someone who could buy whatever he wanted to someone who couldn't afford to get a Starbucks with his friends, I still worked a little but all the money I made went for stuff related to school etc..
It was hard but I did it happily because it is what I love doing , somewhere in between this time this martial art / sport had a little of a boom in my country and it started growing more and more , so basically after nearly 4 years of starvation a guy opened a gym not so far of where I live and I was hired there to teach , now I'm making more money per hour than anyone at my class does while doing design stuff ( I'm and industrial designer ) , at the moment I'm giving a few classes but as soon as I finish whith college at the end of this year I'll be doing thrice what I do now , I will be able to fund my own design business with that money and then even open my own school , so thing are looking great
So from my personal experience whenever you work hard and make sacrifices it will pay off at the end , of course this will only work if you are really passionate about what you are doing because if you are not you will not be able endure the sacrifice and you will give up halfway , also there are lots of ways you can find to save some money , you could even try doing some work filming stuff for people science that is what you are studying etc..
Good luck man

Thanks for the advice, guys. I think that I had the (slightly) wrong perspective on my job. It may not pay that much but if I take it seriously and don't slack then it can be more fulfilling than if I grumbled about it all the time. Also, I don't think I am yet ready to strike out on my own. I have a lot of things to get together first. All the same, thanks.
