When somebody is paying close attention to your words, they'll normally stay silent and make eye contact.

Those who aren't listening go, "Yeah" every 3 seconds or whatever to make the other person think they're listening. Like, "yeah...OK...definitely...totally!".

Pay attention to it in your future conversations and see if you can spot it. ;)

Just to add a quick note here; head nods are also important.

Slow and lengthy head nods indicate understanding and that you're actually listening.
Small nods with a smile or facial reaction encourage you to keep going.
Fast-paced nods (you'll also usually see a person touch their face, hair, neck, eyes widen, etc.) is a sign that they're not listening.

I hadn't thought about those before, but they totally gel with my own recollections.

Really solid additions, there! ^^
