I can't pretend to be a great chess player, but one of the most powerful life lessons I've had comes from the good old game.

You see there is a myth that the greatest players can see a bajillion moves in the future. The truth is that at the beginning they can only see 1 or 2. Near the end game it gets simpler, but I digress.

Trying to see the future like that is similar to a new PUA trying to memorize some scripted conversation. "Ok I say X, then she says Y, and then I say Z..."
Has that ever worked? For anyone? Stop.

One way of playing either chess, or life, is to take a positional approach.

Take the Knight, for example. The knight has, at most, 8 options for where it can move. If it's stuck in a corner, it has 4 moves. In that case, moving it out of the corner is objectively better, unless it is currently doing an important job like preventing a queen from moving, etc.

In life, or PUA, this is your inner game. You go out and have adventures that can turn into interesting stories. You network and make friends. You pick up a new skill or hobby because... well it might put you in a better position in the future. Do you know the exact time and place it will come in handy? Probably not. Nor do you need to know. Because as long as you are continually moving into a better position, you will have more options than if you sit still and do nothing.
