Leaving smoother voicemails

I'm not good at leaving smooth voicemails. Talking into the void, I tend to forget what I meant to say next.

This problem isn't limited to girls I like, but it's only a big deal in such cases. I do it with everyone, male, female, friends, near-strangers. It's not nervousness, just a lack of smooth communication.

Any ideas? Should I write a script if I know a girl will probably be unavailable? Seems excessive. Or should I avoid voicemails unless I have no other option?

Do you mean you lose your train of thought and go into tangents?

Or do you realize your thoughts aren't as easily translated into words while speaking?

Or are you just unsure of how to structure that message with a good flow and end?

Primarily the latter two. I try not to ramble in voicemails these days.
