FR need help with pre-opening on the street

Hey fellows, I approached two girls in that last couple of days after finally finishing my exams. One thing that bothers me is that right after my direct opener, the girls said they were surprised and frightened by the way I approach, so I figure something is wrong and I need to fix it.

The first girl, I saw her walking down the street on the other side, so I crossed the street and approached from behind by touching her lightly on the elbow and kinda stared at her as she's turning around. lol It was the first approach in a long time. I know what went wrong with this one as I'm thinking about it now. I should have approach from the side. Anyway, we talked about where she's from and what's she's studying...etc and deep dive a little, but I feel like I'm not being playful enough or something. Something's off and I can't pinpoint what it was. (frustrating when you don't know your mistake)

The second girl happened the next day, the weather was cold, windy and it was about to rain. I was on my way home when I saw her. Just like the first girl, she was walking down the street on the other side. I approached from the side and tough her elbow lightly and again, couldn't help to look at her first, and I think that's what frightened her too. I used direct opener and we talked for a few minute while walking to the supermarket (where she's going).
Here's the conversation from the 2nd girl
Me:" Hi, I saw you walking past, and thought you were cute and wanted to say hi. I'm J"
Her: " Oh hi, I'm S"
Me: "So S, are you a student around here?
Her: " yes I study communication, theology and blah blah blah (can't remember). I'm graduating next year, and working at blah blah communication"
Me: " wow you're studying a lot of things... so is that what you wanna do forever?"
Her: " hmm idk... where are you from?"
Me: "I'm from XX. U?"
Her: "i'm from HK."
Me: "How long have you been here?"
Her: " 3 years?"
Me: " oh wow! how do you like it here?"
Her: " haha not too bad! u?"
Me: " yea this place is growing on me"
we started walking
Me: " so what are you up to today?
Her: "I'm going to the supermarket then warehouse stationary"
Me: "warehouse stationary? haha I thought the exams just finished"
Her: " oh I'm printing something as a present for a friend...She's leaving."
can't remember the rest of the conversation exactly, but coincidentally I was holding a free DVD, "evolution vs god" I got from some stranger on the street lol, and she happened to study theology, so we talked a bit about that. Didn't grab her number in the end
Questions
1. what's the best way to pre-open and open a girl on the street? I'm thinking about walking next to her first then touch her lightly on the elbow while looking away until she turns to look at you then I turn to establish eye contact. what do you guys think?
2. How can I improve my interaction?

I don't have a lot of time but i'll give you some pointers.

1. it's better to approach from the front then from the side.
2. pre-opening is a bit of a waste in day game, you should just open her with a 'hey' or something.
3. In my experience in daygame you shouldn't touch her before you open her (the opposite of night-game). touch her either while opening, for example hold her hand (don't shake it) or after opening. It's still important you touch her early on in meeting her.
4. Hey you're cute is not bad but you can do better then that. For example i really like you're sense of style or you have really pretty hair,... Also, asking her if she has a boyfriend early on will show if she's interested or not.
5. It's not really mentioned in your conversation but if you can try to move her and try to get compliance.
6. Last but not least, work on your fundamentals

Try to do a bit of research on these things on the forum or in chase's article, i think it'll help you a lot.

Opening with 'are you single?' is still a good way of opening or am i wrong about that?

Thanks for the pointers! when you say opening from the front, do you mean full frontal opening or opening from her 10 o'clock direction? since I heard full frontal can be too intimidating sometime.
