Looking for some thoughts regarding next step in my career. Have been working my way up the "tree" so to speak at my current organisation/profession for a number of years now and have attained a fairly senior standing and wage. But I'm not really happy doing what I'm doing and spend too much energy (stress?) thinking (dreading?) about work even when I'm not in the office. Have also grown weary of the "corporate world": the spin, the job justification meetings/actions, poor leadership motivated by individual goals as opposed to team etc. Changing to another organisation/industry doesn't seem like it would change that aspect of it for me so of course the "dream" is to have my own business and "be in control". Alas, I don't have any bright ideas and would potentially be spending a lot of time on something that doesn't have any legs/isn't going anywhere.

My head space right now is to just choose something totally away from the "corporatised" world (like teaching or human services) - but not inclined to take a huge pay cut that wouldn't be able to support my mortgage
or to continue along a similar line of work with a less "ambitious" organisation and in a role with less responsibility. Less pay and a slower pace, but at least my mind would be free from the stress when I'm away from the office.

One intermediate option would be to start consulting around the role that you perform at your job. You may be able to convert your employer to your client and change the dynamic of your relationship. Then you could court some work from other organizations who may have better cultures and get a bit of an abundance mentality with work. You'll also be able to set your hours/schedule/equipment, etc... Then you'll be a bit more self directed and the experience canbe quite liberating.
Once your comfortable on your own you'll be Ina better position to try new things that are different

My advice...

1.) learn any skill to put food on your table.
2.) think long and hard about the business that you want to start, plan you strategy and take the plunge.

The longer you wait, the more difficult it is to take the plunge.

You say you want to do something new with your career and your in the structured corporate world getting bored? First, I would ask what do you do?

From what I can gather from your post you work for the money as opposed to working for some sort of passion. Not everyone finds a passion but theres normally something at work that gives them value day in and day out. I work in B2B sales and I live for the days when I have a customer ask for help and then tell me I made their day.

What I'm getting at is there has to be something that makes you tick. Analyze that and see if you can get paid for it or transition towards it.

One thing I have begun to really enjoy are TEDTalks. Very informative presentations on anything and everything that has helped me find more things I'm interested in. For a while I had no direction and this helped. Just an idea.
