It's been my experience so far that approaching with a "wider" smile and having some passion in your approach helps hugely in both not being ignored -sometimes women will ignore you if they're a bit worried/hurried- and in having a more positive interaction.
Big smile is less sexy and "passionate", as if in "so great I saw you, my perfect kind of woman", is much higher attainability level.
Mind you, still not as high energy as "TylerRSD" of course, you just open like that and carry some of that energy in the conversation, but still no joker and still about her.
But overall I have noticed it's much better than neutral/boring.
WHY SO
I can imagine it being for 3 reasons:
1. you need some higher than average energy in stopping someone from their day to day or they'd rather steam ahead
2. if you go after someone in the street, then she should have something special that aroused you, otherwise it's incongruent and/or "weird" (as in "does he just hang around doing nothing and approaching everyone?", "is he for real?");
3. it breaks her pattern strongly, she can't ignore you and is sucked in into the interaction. If she likes you, it's a much stronger start to the interaction.
