I thought i'll share an unfortunate tale from my travels in Asia a few months ago. Maybe some GC members can find amusement in this.
To be honest, i just thought she was just really friendly. Maybe she was attracted to me (she definitely seemed into me in hindsight, but i thought she was just curious because i'm a foreigner). Recently i've been thinking about her and wondered what happened.
One night in a city in China, i was staying in a hostel. Inside this comfortable and laid-back hostel was a very pretty local girl. She was staying there (she later told me) because her parents were out and she didn't like staying home alone.
As I walked away from the bar to my room after ordering some hot chocolate (it was really late and i use hot chocolate to feel sleepy), our eyes met. It wasn't intentional, our eyes just happened to meet from across the room and we just kind of held eye contact. Though i didn't really care about her as i just wanted to get some sleep (i couldn't see how pretty she was as the lights were dimmed).
When i had my toothbrush and i was about to brush my teeth before bed, she came inside the bathroom (it was a mixed gender bathroom) and saw me. I still remember to this day how beautiful she looked when she passed by the door. I forgot about brushing my teeth, and naturally just thought about introducing myself.
She said hi, and for at least 30 minutes, we were talking for anything and everything. She was 18 years old, like me. She was smiling all the time and was really giggly (i think she called me 'cute' once - her english was very good). She asked if I was free the next day, and if i was, she can take me around the city or walk with me up the local mountain where the scenery was supposed to be amazing.
When we eventually said bye, we swapped mobile numbers and i wished her good night. I was thinking about her the whole night, dreaming about her probably. She was very cute, her body was perfect and she was almost as tall as me (rare in that part of the world).
However, the problem with travelling from England to Asia is that my natural 'man senses' was messed up (the senses which tell you whether a girl is interested in you). In England, if a girl even smiles at you, or looks at you more than twice, she is usually interested in you (because everyone is so miserable here). But in Asia, everyone looks at you twice, smiles at you and is extra friendly towards you (i suppose because i'm a foreigner/different), but that doesn't always mean a girl is interested in you. So it meant that my mind just ignored all signals from girls and assumed everyone as neutral. It was easier that way. Because of this, i assumed she wasn't interested in me that way (a gorgeous girl interested in me?!, no way), and i just had to play my cards right to get to her.
But i had no idea what to do :/
The next morning, she texted me, asking if i was still there and ready to go up the mountain with her together. I was unfortunately busy that day (with my friend, asking her what I needed to do to attract her). We then set a time to meet together at 4pm the next afternoon outside the train station, and we could catch a bus together to the mountain.
The next day, i was at the train station at 4pm, and we met as the sun was beginning to set. She was in a beautiful white dress and I just can't express how in love i felt at that point. She seemed very happy to see me, and we set off to go to the bus station. We held hands for brief moments (my friend told me i should hold hands with her when i cross the road since girls liked that).
When we arrived at the bus station, she sat beside me and looked at the beautiful sunset outside the window with me. During about 10 minutes of the bus trip and us talking, she asked me whether i had a girlfriend. I kept my cards close to my chest (I was still reading Girls Chase only very occasionally then, but i knew it was best not to comment on whether i have a girlfriend or not and just keep her guessing). I can't remember the rest of the conversation, but i was flirting with her a lot, and she was very giggly and smiling often.
When we arrived on the mountain, it turns out the bus driver left us in the wrong place, so she got mad at bus man, and complained about him to me. I teased her a bit, but tried to lighten the mood. We eventually found a new bus, and went to the correct location. What happened most of the time however, was she lead and i followed. I tried to change this, by walking a bit faster than her and by taking the lead as the road got thinner and one of us had to go behind the other. But doing this seemed to cool her emotions for me somewhat. During our walk to the top, our conversation wasn't as flowing as it was. She even made me invest in her by asking me to hold her (very big and heavy) camera. I couldn't exactly say no; i couldn't let such a delicate flower like her carry such a cumbersome thing like that up a mountain. I was the man, after all.
When we arrived on top of the hill, it was almost night-time, but the view over the city was spectacular. She didn't seem all that interested though. She looked a bit bored and unimpressed by the whole experience. I asked her if we can take a picture together overlooking the city. She declined. I persisted, but she declined. She offered to take a picture of me though, which i accepted.
There was a long line to the scenic area, which was particularly busy so we sat on a bench to wait for our turn. I thought to myself that it was now or never, and leaned into her to kiss her when we were sitting down together. She pulled away immediately. I tried again, but she leaned away until i was nearly on top of her ;(
I kind of gave up after that attempt. I figured that the recent coldness she was giving me and her rejection of a kiss meant that i had blown it, and just sat back enjoying the views while occasionally engaging in conversation with her (which i usually initiated). Whenever i got up and tried to do my own thing (hoping she'll follow and i have a signal that there was still a little attraction left), she'd stay where she was, looking into the night or playing with her phone. I felt like i was in a hopeless situation.
As i was beginning to leave, she started to warm with me again (i can't remember what i said to initiate the conversation, but i must of said the right thing), and she asked whether i'd like to stay with her for the night. Obviously, i agreed, and we got into a taxi to go back to her apartment. On the way,our conversation dried up again. During the taxi ride, another attractive girl came into the taxi and sat with her in the back seat. In my panic of feeling like i was losing the girl i liked, i started flirting (subtly!) with the stranger who just got into the car. She didn't seem too impressed, neither did the taxi driver, and especially not the beauty in the white dress.
Eventually we got out of the taxi. She paid for both of us (about £10/$16), and we took the public bus to her apartment. During the bus ride, she seemed to warm to me again, and she told me all about her school. She said she was good at speaking English because she went to an international school where there was many foreigners. She told me that when she saw me in the hostel, she thought i was an Arab (because of my middle-eastern looks), and she was excited to meet me, because she didn't have an Arab friend before. Sensing my disappointment, she said that it 'wasn't like that', and she said i was a good guy and a good friend.
When we left the bus, and made way towards the building where her apartment was, she stopped at a vendor to buy a drink of water. The vendor asked her if i was her boyfriend (in Chinese), which she promptly laughed and said no in Chinese and i was just a friend. When we arrived at her apartment, she said her mum had arrived early, and if she asks, i shouldn't say that i'm her boyfriend. I teased her, and said maybe i should say we are lovers, but she declined and begged me not to say anything like that.
When we arrived in her apartment, she introduced her mum to me. Her mother was very kind and welcoming to me. She cut us some fruit and cake for us to enjoy together, lent me her husband's pyjamas for me to sleep in and told us she wanted to go to bed so left me and her daughter alone in the main room for the night.
The daughter then told me she was going to have a shower, so went in the bathroom for about half an hour and came out with a very alluring pink nightie (the nightie was a very short cut dress and allowed me to see all of her legs and probably her underwear too if i looked hard enough. Although we stayed up together for about 2-3 hours, we didn't really do much. We just watched T.V. and spoke small talk to each other. She didn't seem interested in starting a conversation at all.
Finally, at around 1.30am, she asked me to see my driving licence (we were talking about the driving laws in China), and i said no, because my picture looked terrible. She then proceeded to become defensive and gave me her photo ID, saying that she didn't care that she looked bad in her ID. She said that i didn't trust her and that i was too secretive. Getting tired of all the games, i asked if i could see her bedroom
, she said no, and i shouldn't ever go there. And after that, she said that she was going to her bed, and that i was not to follow her. She said she will lock her door so i won't go into her bedroom and she will see me the morning after.
And so i went to bed on the sofa, very unhappy and frustrated on how things turned out for me, while hearing sex noises from her parents bedroom.
Around 7am, i awoke to the sound of her mother making breakfast for us. The beauty, now in a blue jumper, told me she booked a place in a Chinese buffet place for us to eat for lunch before she would drop me off at the train station for farewell, but first she asked me to go with her to collect her laptop from her school which she needed to do some work on the afternoon later. I naturally obliged (what else could i say?). I think the idea of her taking me out for lunch was her mother's idea though (she seemed rather fond of me).
When we got onto the bus to her school, the atmosphere was very strange. It wasn't awkward, but she didn't seem to have any interest in talking at all, and her body language was slightly negative when i was sitting next to her. I tried various things to improve her reaction to me, but nothing seemed to work or spark interest in me again, like she didn't want to know me. It felt like the calm before a storm, like i was one sentence away from a massive argument or fall-out, where everything would be over.
As we left the bus and walked in the intense chinese summer sun, she wouldn't let me share her sun umbrella to guard against the sun. She would either let me hold it over her or over myself, or her over herself. She would not let me stand beside her. She gave me her heavy schoolbag and she went into her school to find her laptop while i had to wait outside with the school guard as i was not a student.
He asked me if i knew her. I told him i did not know her well, but i think i made it known in chinese that i found her very beautiful.
When she came out of the school gates after 15 minutes, she seemed to have a short conversation witb the guard, which consisted of her filling out some forms. I was pretty sure that the guard would have told her that i thought she was beautiful.
She then took me to the buffet restaurant, for which she sat down opposite me and started showing me how to collect food. Our conversations were short, but she spent 80% of her time texting on her phone, while not engaging with me. I felt a strong dislike for her during those moments, but i realised that it was my fault for screwing up and my responsibility as a man to lead, not to wait for her to take the initiative. She didn't seem interested in conversation at all.
When we left the (terrible) buffet restaurant which she insisted on paying for (she didn't eat most of what was on her plate), she walked with me to the train station, whereby we said our byes with little emotion (on her part anyway, i was devastated inside) and walked our separate ways. I turned around to see her walk away. She never looked back.
I texted her later on to see how she was. After a long wait of about a day, she replied to me that she didn't use her phone much and she was busy with homework. I texted her a few days later, but to this day, i have never heard from her ever again.
Wow, i feel a bit sad now!
Just wanted share this story which i kept inside so long. I hope i can one day meet her again and set things straight.
