Travel Traveling Cheap and on a Budget

For any guy who has traveled abroad, country does not matter, what tips do you guys have for traveling on a small budget/the least amount of money you've spent for and on a trip? I always talk to people about traveling and people usually tell me traveling abroad for cheap is doable. Later on I'm thinking, "Forgot to ask them how they do it...." What airline, rent a car or don't rent a car, getting around, where to stay at, how not to die are somethings I wonder about haha.

- Book airline tickets using the credit card miles programs.
- Eat local, authentic food. In Peru my friends and I ate three course meals for about $1-2 USD.
- Use intercity buses and not airlines
- Stay at local hostels.
- Research on wikitravel.com
