I have been one 3 categories of the looks spectrum: below average, average, and above average (maybe even attractive). Now I've seen the looks thing being thrown around so much that it is about time I decided to offer up my experience and one that I believe is fairly accurate.
Below average: Early in high school, geeky, glasses, don't care how hair looked, chubby, and could give less of a shit about style. Girls that looked decent did not want to be seen with me and cringed when they would talk to me. Some guys that were popular with girls made fun of me at times and no one really took me seriously. I did try to talk to some girls only to be cut off short. Life was terrible and I was depressed.
Average: Later on in high school and through most of college, lost the weight and got a haircut. Managed to bang an emo chick that was somewhat cute and that was when I lost my virginity. Not long from then I was off to college.
Struggled a lot in college but did have some luck with foreign exchange students. Could not do too well with sorority girls and any of the cute girls on campus no matter how hard I tried. Got flaked on, rejected, had many lonely dinners, and could not really get invited to parties with all the hot girls. Was a very frustrated guy.
Above average: No glasses, low BF, good haircut, some facial hair, etc. After college (and a bit towards the end of it) I slept around a little bit. Life was pretty much on easy mode, getting approached and all sorts of IOI. Ended up dating this German girl. Broke up with her and not long after that came to this forum. Met my girlfriend now who is a blonde bombshell (hope you're reading oh pry!) and have been happy since.
The misconception that people have about looks is that they think looks mean genetics when that isn't the case for the most of us!
Unless you lost the genetic lottery (very short is one thing I can think of), it is not that hard to be above average looking. Most of you in here are in the middle of the genetics test, you might not be a David Beckham but you aren't severely ugly beyond repair either. For most of you, achieving above average looks should not be that hard. It all starts in the gym and with what you eat. Rarely have I met a guy whose goal was to be good looking that worked at it and didn't reach his goal. The reason for this is because the average guy:
1. Doesn't go to the gym that often.
2. Doesn't care about what he eats.
3. Doesn't care to get the right haircut.
4. Is probably overweight or embarrassed to take his shirt off.
5. Doesn't use things like lotions and other things for proper skin care.
So having "above average" looks is not all that hard.
It isn't about the facial symmetry and golden mask ratio, seriously!
It's more about muscle tone, skin care, style (fitted clothes), and maybe facial hairstyles (chinstrap is popular for some reason). When girls say they find a guy hot, they see a guy who is actually pushing it. Most of the times I have seen guys who have maxed out what their genetics gave them get the hottest girls while those who were naturally good looking did not push themselves enough and ended up being single or getting girls way below their league.
So my point is that looks do matter a lot but the good news is you can do a lot to better your looks and it pays off.
I have had all sorts of IOIs and random women just look at me. When I have visited college towns with my current state I have had college girls give me attention and approach me. In places like bars I have been approached or had women smile as I walked over at their direction. Even through activities I participated in such as dance class I ended up getting a lot of extra attention from instructors (especially a female instructor) and other females. Some of my friends have better understanding of game than I do but I do better than they do.
Now looks are not a substitute for game but they make the game a lot easier. Game is still needed to close the deal and you can be a hot guy with low self-esteem but with all that said, looks matter a lot especially in this day and age with apps such as Tinder.
