I have this phenomenal productivity hack... I've used it for years.

It goes like this:

  1. Identify the 2-3 things that are sucking up the majority of your time and emotions right now and completely squandering them

  2. In particular, look for things that a.) you go to as diversions to get away from things you need to do, and/or b.) that alter your emotions, especially making you angry, annoyed, or lazy

  3. TOTALLY BAN YOURSELF from doing those things at all for one week, with an option to increase the ban length if you reach the end of the week and feel good about it and want to continue

It doesn't matter what those things are. They could be:

  • Playing video games
  • Reading the news
  • Watching Netflix
  • Masturbating to porn
  • Smoking marijuana
  • Spending hours a day swiping on dating apps
  • Hanging out on social media creeping on profiles and newsfeeds
  • Getting lost in infinite-content zones like Reddit

It also doesn't matter if it feels like you have to do these things, or else you'll go crazy/get bored/not have an outlet.

Try banning ALL the ones that are vampiring your time and emotions for one week.

See how you feel at the end of that week.

If it's a good feeling, extend it another week or two.

Then at the end of that, if you want, extend it a bit more.

Once you're a couple months in, make sure you buy a GC product or sign up for the reader plan to say thanks for all the money you'll be making from all that extra free productive time you get in your day, not to mention your newer, more centered, far healthier emotional state ;)

Oh man I love laying in bed and taking naps.or sleeping past 8 hrs even if I already have had enough sleep. Idk how to give that up. If I have nothing to do and i'm off from work that's always been my default. I'm addicted to comfort and it's always been my drug.
Also I think i've bought all your gc products so far and am waiting for another reason to give you fellas my money lol. Would much rather support men who are giving me useful practical information that I cannot find anywhere else than subscribe to some woman's onlyfans who posts weakass nudes(which you can find for free sometimes) for weak men. The only thing i'm missing is the readership plan lol.

Cheers for the support, @Starboy!

I don't know if a few hours extra sleep per day is necessarily a bad thing. Some folks need a little extra.

I find personally having something productive to do that I'm excited for gets me off this. Because as soon as you're awake, it pops into your head and you go, "Oh yeah, I have that thing to do!" and your mental wheels start spinning like mad.

Or if you want yourself getting up precisely on time, and don't mind a week of anti-comfort, what I've done at times was train myself to wake with an alarm clock by making myself spring out of bed as soon as the alarm went off. It's torture for a week, but after that first week you are instantly awake the moment the alarm goes off and cannot fall back asleep.

A few more weeks of it and if the alarm's always at the same time of day you start waking up one minute before the alarm clock, wide awake and ready to start the day. Then you don't even need the alarm clock anymore...

There's also working at cafés. I can get a little lazy at home, but it's a lot harder to goof off (or take naps, for that matter) when you're out somewhere in public... if you have things you need to do that you can do in such places, of course...

Whoa!

This is a great subtle tip @Chase. coincidently I’ve been doing this prod tip since about August, specifically avoiding the “infinite-content zone” websites that I found were consuming my mind.

Something I quickly learned, and Freud and others wrote about this phenomenon, is that when one behavior is erased, it is often quickly replaced by another behavior of similar ease and satisfaction. So I went from fiddling around on one website, to fiddling around on YouTube; then from YouTube to a book; Then from a book to another website. Now I have a bunch of sites banned lol. Basically, it’s hard to replace websurfing with working on something because the two aren’t equally easy or pleasurable; but web surfing to porn or eating is very easy. Nowadays I play guitar, listen to music (which is stimulating and allows me to focus on other stufff simultaneously) or read a book as replacements.

Very true, @Chrance!

Cut out one distraction and something else will take its place.

Not all distractions are created equal though. I find it's very hard to do much book-reading when I permit myself other high-engagement distractions.

When those are out though, suddenly I find myself reading good books when I want a little downtime. Which I generally get more out of.

You need to keep an eye on what substitute diversions you use when you clip that initial set. And you might end up needing to do a few rounds of pruning to get the real time sinks out.

@Karea Ricardus D. uses a program called Focus Me to control his web surfing. Lets you do things like put time locks on various time-drain websites.

There is an old "management rule" that says 80% of your time is spent dealing with 20% of your tasks. When I first saw it I was quite sceptical but the more I look at how my time is used the more I realised how true it is. A couple of examples:

Managing staff - 20% of your staff will cause you 80% of your problems - sickness reviews, performance interviews, disciplinary reviews etc

Managing clients/sales - 80% of your business will come from 20% of your clients - look after that 20% of the clients that don't cause issues and don't be firghtened to loose the difficult clients and use your time to replace them with other clients

Just becasue it's old that shouldn't detract from how useful and how ture it is. Chase has given a really good practical explanation of how to apply a similar rule, the difficult part is always having the strength to impliment change and then the strength to maintain those changes.

and then the strength to maintain those changes

The trouble for me was always that I want to change to many things at once since I can be an impatient fella. And it's probably the impatience I should tone down lol. It's easy to get burned out quickly if you try change five things at once. Focus on two things you want to change, no more than two!

@Karea Ricardus D. uses a program called Focus Me to control his web surfing. Lets you do things like put time locks on various time-drain websites.

If you own a smartphone, you can find similar apps to block certain apps and websites. You can also schedule at which hours you want to block. With an app like BlockSite, I have downloaded it on Chrome both on my laptop and smartphone. Then I can synchronize the details, i.e. the sites I've blocked on my laptop will automatically be blocked on my smartphone as well. One downside is that you can always deactivate it if you feel like spending hours with all those things you're not supposed to be doing.
