The Alpha and the Sigma are both extremely high level frames and statuses as men, but the focus is different between each.
The typical Alpha is dominant, assertive, popular and socially a leader. Alpha's are aware of their social standing and work hard at maintaining it- they care about who they are and where they are in their social circle and do not like to be challenged, ridiculed or lose face in anyway. Losing face can hurt the Alpha greatly. Alpha's require Beta males around him he can dominate, whether its work colleagues or Beta friends, he will make sure they know who's boss. The typical Alpha is what BD refers to as an Alpha 1 - in relationships this man typically favors an OSM style arrangement, where he's dating a pretty girl and she's exclusive to him, but he's not exclusive to her - and will sleep with multitudes of girls with or without her tacit knowledge and consent. Alphas love to have control, including over their women. As a result of this Alphas typically have extremely passionate but high drama relationships, and you'll often see a lot of drama, breakups and makeups because of his cheating habits (or if the girl gets too uncomfortable, her own cheating habits.)
The Sigma is similar to an Alpha but with a completely different focus - he's also dominant, popular, assertive, and knows his way about people, but doesn't care for most of the things the Alpha cares for. The Sigma is best compared to a "lone wolf" type - independent and a loner, his interest is not in dominating others or to have the highest social standing, it's instead completely self centered to get something that he is interested in. He is the opposite of the Alpha in terms of personality and priorities but posseses all the same qualities and more; often the Sigma is shaped from childhood, is from a poor background and suffered social rejection in middle and high school - during these formative years when many will go on to develop Beta and Omega traits under such conditions, a Sigma has a natural internal confidence that stops him from declining. Sigma's are independant loners who do not need followers, but can be social and to a degree likeable and popular, but will vanish from the group when (inevitably) he gets bored of the same faces. Often Sigmas will oscillate and float around between different groups. The Sigma can get the girl if he wants to but will pass on relationships and women if it gets in the way of his self interest. The Sigma is closer to what BD terms the Alpha 2 - if he's a true Sigma, he literally doesn't care what his woman does as long as she doesn't affect his health or status in any way. More sigmas operate under entirely non-monogamous, or semi-monogamous relationships, if they have those at all. The sigma doesn't feel jealously towards a woman's actions, he'll just use it as a signal that it's time to get a new woman, instead of a fighting and trying to control her about it.
A Sigma could have been an Alpha if his upbringing had nurtured him to be so. Alpha's are more powerful in that they have more possessions and property. Sigma's are more powerful still because they have social independence and still succeed.
