If you set the goal to 8 solid productive hours a day, and to eat/exercise/stretch/ meditate/quick-break to keep your mind fresh and motivated, you may end up happier in the long run.
One of the most helpful things to me is to combo exercise whenever I feel fatigue kick in, usually every two hours or so. Drop and do as many push-ups as possible, then as many pull-ups as possible, then as many crunches as possible. Takes less than 5 minutes and gives your body a physical shock that releases endorphins. On days when I'm dragging and not wanting to work at all, a few sets of these will get me going too. I know if I just get up and fing do them, I'll WANT to get to work and my whole day will go better.
The trap is that many habits that are set in your 20s stay for life. So the "'ll stop eventually" often never happens.
