Howdy y’all,
I’m a former bouncer. I’ve worked at a busy bar/club on 6th street in Austin, a somewhat upscale strip club, and a large pool hall in a rough part of town. All three were very different experiences and helped broaden my perspective.
I come to you today hours before I start my first shift in a new bar on 6th street after a hiatus of about 5-6 months. I’d like to discuss the potential pros and cons of working as a bouncer, both in a personal and a general sense. Hopefully I can get some advice about my personal situation and answer any questions you guys might have about bouncing. Forgive me if I fuck up some of the pickup terms. Still new to all this.
Pros:
-Tons of contact with attractive girls (on 6th street in particular)
-Getting paid to be out (sometimes drinking for free). I’m currently unemployed and need to start bringing in some cash. I got a good chunk of change in the bank, but I hate seeing it slowly disappear.
-Position of authority
-Better access to hot bartenders (industry people often date other industry people)
-Potential to work your way up to bartender or manager....better pay and higher value with those positions
-The benefits of building connections:
1) Lots of free drinks for you and your friends/dates on off nights
2) Said friends and dates enjoying things more and feeling more comfortable since they are there with an insider
3) Pre-selection with bar staff (this slowly grows outside your bar over time as people move on to other bars), regulars, and other industry people who are also out on off nights.
Cons (these change from person to person so I’m focusing mostly on personal cons):
-Limited ability to approach. Sometimes you can sit and talk for awhile, but ultimately you’re working and you’re limited in your interactions.
-Playing off the previous point, you might lose out on the opportunity to work on your game on the busy weekend nights and you’re much less likely to be able to stop and have a good chat with things being so busy.
-It might stunt the development of your game. I’m tall, muscular, and not too ugly. I got some decent value and pre-selection to work with. I got a high volume of drunk girls passing by. I might just fall into the comfortable trap of waiting for girls to come to me, which they will...and it’s rarely the girls I really want to approach. It’s lazy, passive, and doesn’t actually help me in my goal to find the girl I really want. It stunts the development of game. No doubt you will improve in some ways from picking up these girls, but you’ll be crippled in some other areas.
-SNLs are extremely rare. A girl may wanna fuck you at 11 o’clock, but you gotta work several more hours. A girl may wanna fuck you at 2 o’clock, but you still gotta kick them out and clean up and get your tip out for the night which takes at least another hour. On rare occasion you might be able to let them stick around inside and somehow keep them interested while you clean for an hour.....or maybe they find their way home and actually wait up for you....or maybe they just wait in their car. All very low percentage scenarios.
-As a result of the last point, you get lots of numbers that flake the next day when they sober up.
-Being a bouncer has value in some girls’ eyes, but it works to your detriment with others. Tough when you want a smart girl with a decent career who doesn’t party very much.
-Personally, it can take a physical and mental toll. Less energy and more aches and pains can dissuade anyone from working out. And the desire to drink is a big vice for me. Working sober can be very boring and draining....drinking makes it much more enjoyable and also helps numb those aches and pains. It also makes me way better with girls (probably true for most guys...as long as they don’t get sloppy). As someone who’s into physical fitness and wants to get shredded for the first time ever....drinking = lots of empty calories.
-Pay isn’t great...it might detract from my ability or desire to pursue more ideal avenues of income...particularly passive or online sources.
I’m thinking I might try to just take like 3 nights a week for now. I’m thinking something like tues, thurs, fri to have a break between the three shifts with Saturday’s open so I can have at least one busy night to go out. Maybe Wednesday-Friday so I can have 4 day weekends...nice if I wanna have a mini vacation.
Anyways, I’m wondering what some of you more experienced guys are thinking. How do I use this position to get great results while also improving? I think it’s a great opportunity for getting girls as long as I don’t let it stunt my progress with game or with fitness.
I don’t NEED this work. I could possibly go out every single night otherwise. But drinking as much as I want and spending all the money on overpriced drinks every night aren’t sustainable. The money and free drinks and the extra exercise would be really nice for sustainability while still kind of being “out”.
Welcome to hear any thoughts and opinions and also answer questions about being a bouncer.
